PACE reps to have several meetings in Russia to compile review of Russian commitments

Rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for Russia Andreas Gross and Gyorgy Frunda who arrived in Moscow Sunday evening intend to hold several fact-finding meetings.

PACE vice speaker and deputy head of the Russian delegation to the assembly Leonid Slutsky told journalists that both rapporteurs plan to hold the final round of talks by way of preparing their full-scale review of the honoring of obligations and commitments by Russia. «They are scheduled to have meetings at the Supreme Court, the Justice Ministry, the Prosecutor General's Office and also with Russian MPs - members of our national delegation to PACE,» Slutsky said. In addition, both co-rapporteurs intend to visit Nizhniy Novgorod between July 17 and 19. «The final resolution they will draft on the country report on Russia is expected to be tentatively discussed at the PACE monitoring committee on September 4,» he said.

The country report is an analysis of the political, humanitarian and legal situation in a specific country. According to PACE regulations, such reports are made once in two years. However, with regard to Russia the rule was broken and the previous report on it was delivered in 2005. The new monitoring report on the fulfillment of Russia's commitments to the Council of Europe is expected to be delivered by the co-rapporteurs at the autumn session of PACE that will begin in Strasbourg during the first week of October.
